Notting Hill (1999)

“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

Anna Scott smiling at the press conference

Julia Roberts has starred in a good swath of romantic comedies, including A pretty woman and runaway bride, both having famous quotes. But it was in one of his most famous films, Notting Hill, that Roberts delivered one of his most recognizable lines to date.

One Redditor in particular chose “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” as the most recognizable movie quote. Playing Anna Scott, Roberts’ famous line gave the character a vulnerability and openness that melted the hearts of viewers. It was Scott’s willingness to wear his heart on his sleeve and confess his feelings that made the line stand out and make it recognizable for the film it is in.

The Dark Knight (2008)

“Why so serious?”

Heath Ledger as The Joker

It became one of Heath Ledger’s finest films, putting his own mark on the DC villain and setting the bar high for other actors to take on the role. Along with a memorable cameo and grim scenes, the Joker provided a series of instantly recognizable lines in The black Knight.

For a now-deleted Reddit user, the line that stands out is “Why So Serious?” The short phrase left a big impression on audiences, with three words fueling his clown image but cut with a sharp, mean sense. It can be said that Ledger’s exceptional play has contributed greatly to making the quote so recognizable.

Shreek (2001)

“I like this rock, it’s a beautiful rock.”

A donkey sold by a woman to Shrek

There are plenty of great children’s movies for adults and Shrek maybe just one of them. The early 2000s animated film became a huge hit with adults and children alike, offering an imaginative storyline for the latter, but subtle humor for the former.

As one of his simplest quotes, Redditor pokeblue992 picked “I like this rock, it’s a pretty rock” as the most recognizable. Donkey was one of the funniest characters in movies and his recognizable quotes were many due to his enthusiasm, kind heart and cheerful personality. Complimenting a rock was typical for him, never missing a beat to make the audience laugh.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

“Toto, I feel like we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

There are many musical films from decades ago that remain in the hearts of fans and are still watched by today’s generations. The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939, but is still quoted today.

As the young lady finds her way through a completely new world, Judy Garland provided viewers with various quotes that would forever be recognized. Reddit user RudegarWithFunnyHat chose, “Toto, I feel like we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Fans can easily recognize the quote as it encapsulates Dorothy’s innocence and surprise upon landing in the fantasy world, which is completely different from her Kansas home, later realizing “there’s no place like the House”.

Spiderman (2002)

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

Uncle Ben talks to Peter in the car in Spider-Man

Marvel movies not only have inventive characters and creative stories, but the script work has developed many quotes that are often used and recognized by fans around the world.

In Spider Man (which featured Tobey Maguire) Uncle Ben delivered a deep and moving line, which Reddit user Lisaannottaken considers the most recognizable: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Although the quote doesn’t derive from the movie and is actually Voltaire’s origin, the context hit viewers hard, especially since Ben was just trying to help his nephew. It could be greatly applied to Spider-Man’s life, resonate with fans, and is now easily recognized due to the scene it was used in.

Titanic (1997)

“I’m the king of the world !”

Jack Dawson screams at the Titanic

Although not particularly historically accurate, Titanic is a memorable film as it followed the tragic sinking of the titular ship and the unthinkable struggle people faced to survive after the disaster.

As one of the film’s main characters, Jack is of a lower class and manages to secure a place on the ship. Reddit user Slow-Down_Turbo said, “I’m the king of wooooooorlld,” is the movie’s most recognizable quote and it’s easy to see why. Jack was able to experience a freedom he had probably never felt before. Standing at the front of the ship made him feel like a king, expressing this with joy, unaware of the fate that awaited him. Not only is it easy to recognize, but it’s also one of Jack Dawson’s best quotes in the movie.

Snakes on a Plane (2006)

“I got it with those fucking snakes on that fucking plane.”

It May Not Be One Of Samuel L Jackson’s Best Movies, But Audiences Still Remember It Snakes on a planemainly for his famous quote.

Reddit user GrumpyCatStevens said, “I got it with those goddamn snakes on that goddamn plane” is the most recognizable movie quote for them. It can be considered as such because of Samuel L Jackson’s easily identifiable voice and the emphasis with which it is said. The plot of the film might not have been the most revolutionary, but almost everyone knows this quote.

The Lord of the Rings (2001)

“You can’t pass!”

Gandalf talking to Pippin in The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King

A now-deleted Reddit user chose “You shall not pass!” as the most recognizable quote, which is said by Gandalf. When fighting Balrog, Gandalf powerfully spells out the quote with a clear meaning. Any fan who utters this line is almost guaranteed to say it with the same ferocity as Gandalf because it’s also her delivery that makes her so recognizable.

The Adults (2010)

“I want us to waste chocolate.”

Becky looks worried in Grown Ups

There are plenty of great adult quotes in movies and even animated characters, but that’s not to say young kids haven’t delivered great lines over the years.

In The adults, panic ensues when the adults have to explain what the word “wasted” means, but they play it off as meaning to really want ice cream. Hearing this, Becky comes back with a quote that Redditor simplexseason thinks is the most recognizable. “I want to lose chocolate,” is a great line because the character doesn’t know what it really means, but is kindly trying to join in on the fun, but also uses a grown-up word. Adam Sandler’s movies have a great way of making every character hilarious, at some point.

The Lion King (1994)

“Hakuna Matata.”

Some quotes are self-contained, unique, and stick in the minds of viewers. But others are memorable because they are incorporated into a song or even the lyrics of the title.

Redditor CedarWolf has decided that “Hakuna Matata” is the most recognizable movie quote, and there’s definitely an argument here. Timone and Pumba were great characters for the kids to connect with and when they brought the wonderful phrase to light, it really stood out. The uplifting line is easy to recognize due to its uniqueness and feel-good factor and, of course, the quirky characters who say (or sing) it.
