While we wait for the now-delayed fourth installment, let’s rank the other three films in the John Wick franchise based on their critical ratings.

Keanu Reeves made a triumphant return to action movies as the title character in 2014 John wick. The first film was a surprise hit that kicked off the franchise with its stunning action sets which also helped reignite Reeves’ status as an action superstar. As the films progressed, their story grew and expanded to include aesthetically appealing sets and interesting characters. It’s one of the few current action franchises that isn’t based on pre-existing material, like the comics.

The fourth installment of the franchise – John Wick: Chapter 4 – Originally slated for release in 2022 but was delayed until 2023. So, while fans wait for this new movie, let’s take a look at the three previous films and rank them from lowest to highest. Scores are based on a combined score from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

John Wick – 77

The first part of the franchise, John wick, has the lowest score of the three films so far, but it is far from being poorly rated. With a Metacritic score of 68 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86% for an average score of 77, this is a strong movie to kick off a series. With rich cinematography and a a very reassured directorial debut by Chad Stahelski – Reeves’ double on The matrix – the film has a satisfying story with a rich history.

After the death of his wife, John Wick crosses paths with the son of a Russian crime lord who murders his dog, the last gift from his late wife. Wick swears revenge and leaves a bloody trail of bodies as he returns to the criminal underworld he had previously withdrawn from in favor of a calmer life. His return to action is reluctant but precise, proving that he truly is the man legends have made of him.


John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – 81

The latest installment in the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, comes next on the list with a combined critical score of 81. Taking the action to its highest level so far with unique stunts and shocking twists, the fight sequences are creative and fresh, bringing in something new to the franchise in every fight. The film brought back familiar characters, including Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King, and introduced Halle Berry’s Sofia Al-Azwar. Metacritic gave the film a 73, and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 89%. While some critics have said the film seemed to have pushed the story beyond its premises and so complicated what was once a simple setup, most critics rave about the action show.

The most recent film features John Wick facing the consequences of his actions at the end of John Wick: Chapter 2. After breaking the rules of The Continental, John is on the run from a legion of highly skilled and deadly assassins. The third installment takes action fight sequences to the next level as Wick fights for his life on the streets of New York City and around the world, calling the favors of his former contacts. The film’s shocking ending sets up the sequel to come as fans anxiously await to see what comes next for the legendary assassin.


John Wick: Chapter 2 – 82

So far, the top-ranked installment of the John wick the franchise is John Wick: Chapter 2. The movie takes the premise to the next level with a bigger budget and a more comprehensive scale. Reeves is joined by Fishburne, Common, and Ruby Rose, as Wick is brought back to the world of assassins. He’s called to pay an old debt now that he’s returned to the world of assassins after the events of the first film. Audiences are introduced to the larger world of John Wick’s assassin past as the film opens the myth to the world and showcases Wick’s skills that prove he’s better than everyone else.


With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% and a Metacritic score of 75 for a combined Critical Score of 82, he is currently the highest rated of all. John wick movie theater. In his review of the film, Angelique Jade Bastien calls it “the platonic ideal of an action film” and comments on the awe-inspiring nature of the action sets. In general, critics praised the comedic timing, jaw-dropping action, and expansion of the John wick myth and construction of the world.
