November 21, 2022, © Leeham News: The film Dedication opens November 23 in the United States.

Based on a true story, the film tells the story of the US Navy’s first African-American fighter pilot (at the time, “Negro”). The timeline is the Korean War.

Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell are the main male actors. Majors was in eight movies before Dedication. Powell appeared in hidden numbers, about the first African Americans (in this case, all women) employed by NASA. Powell portrayed John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.

Majors plays Jesse Brown, the African American. Powell portrays Tom Hudner, who becomes Brown’s closest friend in a squadron that, unsurprisingly for the time, has its share of fanatics.

The film was made by Black Label Media, founded by Molly Smith, the daughter of FedEx founder Fred Smith. He helped finance the photo. Black Label product Only the brave a film about paratroopers in Arizona who were killed fighting a forest fire; and Sicario, the Day of the Soldado.

Dedication takes us through Brown’s nuggets on his family life, his early days in the Navy, and his efforts to qualify as a fighter pilot. A talented pilot, Brown initially had some difficulty qualifying for carrier operations (he was neither the first nor the last). His heroic actions during a mission over North Korea are followed by his crash landing, trapped in his plane. He survived the crash landing. Hudner, his wingman, wheeled out to try to free Brown from the burning wreckage.

It’s a story of dedication to duty and dedication to your wingman. It’s a navy racing story with Brown becoming a trailblazer.

Airplanes are also stars in this film and there is a local connection to Washington State and Oregon.

Real planes, not CGI

The story is captivating and so is the flight. If moviegoers liked Top Gun: Maverick for using real planes and real flights over Washington State’s Cascade Mountain Range, they’ll love it Dedication. The planes are Korean War era privateers and even a Mig jet. All are real and the flight through the Cascades is also real.

The Cascades double for the mountains of North Korea. The Columbia River between Washington and Oregon doubles for bombing and strafing to destroy a key bridge. The Oregon doubles for the forced landing site in North Korea.

The flight is as exciting as the story is captivating. Rating: Four stars.
