“Andande pennoruthee”, composed by Kannan CJ for Jayaraj’s film “Aval”, is a tribute to the fearless spirit of a woman who creates a life for herself despite her unique challenges. The song introduces us to Prabha, a hard-of-hearing and hard-of-hearing domestic helper, who is a sunny presence in the lives of others, though she hasn’t known love or care for herself. Playback singer Mathai Sunil perfectly captured the spirit of the protagonist with his moving rendition of the lyrics, penned by Muhad Vembayam.
‘Aval’, according to the director, was conceived by him long before ‘Ottal’, an adaptation of a Russian short story, which won several national and international accolades. “’Aval’ is based on my domestic helper. It was a story I wanted to tell for over 10 years. I was surprised by her enthusiasm for life, despite the obstacles she had to face,” he said during the audio release of the song. The late KPAC Lalitha also plays an important role in the film.
The director, who has delivered several notable works like “Sopanam” and “Desadanam”, originally approached critically acclaimed actor Nandita Das for the project. “She was very impressed with the script but had to drop the project for some reason. My next choice was Manju Warrier who was about to make his return to Malayalam cinema during this period. Manju, however, expressed his doubts and said she might not be able to rise to the challenge of playing such a strong character.
“That’s when I decided that Surabhi Lakshmi would play the role and she immediately agreed. She played her role so well that I couldn’t tell the real Surabhi and Prabha apart,” the director said.
The film is produced by Manoj Govindan and Shibu Nair under the banner of Golden Wings Productions.
