Marvel’s Eternals writers Kaz and Ryan Firpo recently revealed that Kang the Conqueror was once in talks to appear in the film.
In a new interview with Eternals Screenwriters Kaz and Ryan Firpo, it was revealed that Kang the Conqueror was once in talks to appear in the film. Eternals arrived in theaters on November 5 and marks the third cinematic installment of Phase 4 of the MCU. He follows a group of powerful celestial beings as they face one of Earth’s greatest threats; the Deviants. In addition to directing the film, Chloe Zhao also co-wrote Eternals with the Firpos and Patrick Burleigh.
Kaz and Ryan are two relatively unknown screenwriters who also double as cousins. The duo landed perhaps one of the most sought-after gigs after launching a Eternals script for Marvel in 2018, which was quickly picked up in the studio. Zhao, a self-proclaimed MCU fan, was on the shortlist to direct the film and landed the job that same year. According to the Firpos, there was a lot that didn’t quite reach the final script, like a story that featured 12 Eternals instead of 10. One of Kaz and Ryan’s early scripts included Eternals Zuras and Valkan, but the characters were later cut.
Surprisingly, Zuras and Valkan weren’t the only characters not featured in the final script. Speaking on The playlist podcast, the Firpos revealed that Kang was believed to appear in Eternals in early versions of the script. Ryan admitted to being “really fascinated” by the character after his shocking introduction into Loki, and the thought bringing Kang into Eternals could relate to the dominant themes of the film of immortality. Ultimately, Kaz and Ryan agreed to walk away from the idea, choosing instead to focus on the story’s main antagonists, the Deviants. Ryan’s full quote can be read below:
“I would say that I was introduced to Kang through my research on the Eternals, and I was really fascinated with him and obviously, [Michael] Waldron and Loki brought it to life in a truly exciting way. He was also someone for whom I was like, “This could be cool.” Mainly because we are dealing with immortality. There were even versions on the pitch where we thought Kang could have gotten involved and somehow spoiled the Eternals timeline a bit. But then, you know, we got off a little bit from that. He was someone who really fascinated me.
Although he may not have appeared in Eternal, there’s no doubt that Kang is set to take on a huge role in the MCU. As explained by Ryan, Kang made his debut in Disney + Loki show earlier this year, and Johnathan Majors certainly gave a memorable performance. Kang has the potential to be one of Marvel’s most intimidating villains to date, especially after the multiverse fell into chaos after taking control of the Time Variance Authority in the Loki season 1 finale. Last December it was also confirmed that the Majors would play Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and will act as the film’s main antagonist. So, while viewers of the Kang variant met in Loki was portrayed as a bit morally gray, fans are sure to see the character as a villain in his own right in the upcoming one. The ant Man movie.
a Eternals a sequel could be happening at Marvel, with Kaz and Ryan already teasing the addition of popular comic book characters like Galactus. There is a long way to go until eternal 2 sees the light of day, but it will be interesting to see if any of the Eternals make an appearance in the next MCU projects before then. As for Kang, fans are hoping to see him before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premieres in 2023. Either way, Kang is set to become Marvel’s next threat at Thanos’ level, and it’s only a matter of time before he makes his next appearance at the screen.
