A study conducted by Uswitch reveals Spider-Man: No Coming Home to be the most illegally watched movie this year. Launching in theaters in December 2021, the Marvel and Sony blockbuster had a terrific run in theaters, spending several months atop the box office as immense profits rolled in. The film reached nearly $2 billion in ticket sales, making No coming home one of the most financially successful releases in film history.
Even with so many people flocking to theaters to see this film, however, not everyone was ready to shell out the dough. Hackers have also flocked to illegally download or stream the Spider Man film, doing from afar No coming home the most pirated movie of 2022. According to Uswitch research, there were 83,390 monthly searches in 2022 for Spider-Man: No Coming Home streams. It’s not even close when it comes to the movie in place #2, which would be Avengers: Endgame to 3,210 monthly searches, followed by Interstellar to 2,910 monthly searches.
Directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Coming Home was so successful in part because it had a history of two decades in the making. The movie brought back Tobey Maguire characters Spider Man trilogy, as well as those of Andrew Maguire the amazing spider-man movies. Maguire and Garfield reprized their versions of Peter Parker to team up with the MCU’s web-slinger incarnation, played by Tom Holland. Seeing all three Spideys on the big screen is widely considered one of the greatest crossover moments of all time, and people were determined to watch it at all costs, even if it came at no financial cost.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was a big hit despite heavy piracy
Watching movies illegally might not cost a pirate a movie ticket, but there are risks. Uswitch Broadband expert Nick Baker stressed how important it is to avoid online piracy, as it’s not worth the associated risks.
“With the rising cost of living, some people may turn to illegal downloading as a way to access their favorite TV shows, movies, games and software online,” Baker said. “This could be concerning, as online piracy not only negatively impacts creators, but can pose risks to your own security.
Baker adds, “Using illegal hacking websites can put users at extreme risk of hacking and phishing scams, making your personal data vulnerable. On top of that, industries that are affected by illegal downloading keep a close eye on the internet and may take legal action against you if caught. While the temptation to pirate your favorite content is enticing, it’s worth considering whether it’s really worth exposing yourself to scams and lawsuits.”
