While Peacemaker seems far removed from the DCEU, James Gunn confirms that a character from the series will appear in an upcoming DC project.
According to James Gunn, a character from Peacemaker will appear in another DCEU project. The series derived from The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, premiered its first three episodes on HBO Max on January 14, 2022 to rave reviews from critics and audiences. Peacemaker marks the first TV series set in the DCEU, with more to come in the future to expand the universe and introduce more characters.
In addition to Peacemaker, the series has already introduced Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) and Judomaster (Nhut Le) to the DCEU. The series also mixed Peacemaker’s father from the comics with villain The White Dragon, an obscure white supremacist supervillain from the comics. With five more episodes remaining, it’s entirely possible to have more DC Comics characters and possibly other DCEU characters like members of The Suicide Squad might appear.
While Peacemaker is still in the DCEU, the show’s style is very different from most other projects, which suggested that the show’s characters would likely stay in their own little corner of the universe. Gunn recently appeared on Top 5 TVs podcast with The Hollywood Reporter and said a character from the series would appear in an upcoming DCEU project but did not specify which character or project. He said DC could use any of the other characters and play the same way Marvel incorporated The guardians of the galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Gunn said:
“It’s part of the DCU, I mean they can use these characters…I mean one of these characters, that people have kind of figured out, one of these characters is used in a future grand DC movie that comes from here. So we’re connected to all of this… who knows what role these characters are going to play in the future? I mean, no one knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were, and then everything suddenly they are massive players in [Avengers:] Infinity War and [Avengers:] Game over. So who knows what’s going to happen with Peacemaker in ten years, five years or whatever.”
The most obvious answer is Peacemaker himself, which given the character’s history in the comics with Blue Beetle in the Pre-New 52 series, could mean an appearance in the next one. blue beetle movie. However, given the teen-centric focus of this movie, it’s unlikely that DC and WB would want to introduce a character as an integral part of an R-rated property. Even if it’s not Peacemaker, there are still several films and TV shows in development and a world of possibilities in which the other characters could appear.
The Justice Society., which will appear in black adam, and the Birds of Prey featured the Sonia Sato incarnation of Judomaster, so the version introduced in Peacemaker could appear later to set up the introduction of a new Judomaster. ARGUS is a major government organization in the pages of DC Comics, and the organization could feature in one of the upcoming projects like black adam, flash, Where Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, lending to a possible appearance of characters like Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) who appeared in The Suicide Squad or newcomers Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) and Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji).
The series may have already given a hint at a broader connection to the DCEU. The threat in the series appears to be a creature that controls a human host called butterflies, named for their appearance. Their mind-controlling aspect, in addition to the insect connection, hints that this is related to the evil genius caterpillar Mr. Mind, which was hinted at in the end credits. Shazam!. Mr. Mind should not appear in the next film Shazam! Fury of the gods, maybe because the character is the main villain of Peacemaker, but may be referenced by any of the characters in the next Shazam! following.
