Titanic director James Cameron has said he’s planning six-hour marathon films for streaming platforms, with a “rollercoaster” version for theaters.
The Oscar-winning director is no stranger to making epic films and is currently filming parts four and five of the Avatar series, with the highly anticipated second film coming out in December – 12 years after the first film was released.
The 67-year-old Canadian said he was excited about the “chaos” that streaming platforms like Netflix had brought to Hollywood.
He said Variety: ‘I am not afraid. I like the change. I am a child of the 60s. I like it when things are chaotic. I think what we can see is an expanded form of cinema. I want to make a six hour and two and a half hour film at the same time. Same movie.
“You can stream it for six hours, or you can have a more condensed, immersive, roller coaster version of that movie theater experience. Same movie. Just one is the novel, and the other is the movie. Why not? Let’s just use these platforms in a way that has never been done before. ‘

The comments come amid a seismic shift in the film industry that has been accelerated by the pandemic as theaters have been forced to close with closures.
This has seen films come out direct to streaming platforms, quickly becoming the preferred mode of consumption for many moviegoers.
The roaring trade that Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple have done has given them the power to fund their own exclusive movies for their customers.

Some of Netflix’s biggest hits include Oscar-nominated Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler.
Cameron plans to release a new Avatar movie every two years starting this year, with Avatar 5 slated for 2028.
Fox, a traditional Hollywood studio, funds the films.
Avatar’s debut film, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Cameron’s previous record holder Titanic, released in 1997.
He described the colossal task ahead, telling Variety, “I haven’t made it out alive yet. ‘2’ is fully in the box. We have a working cut that we fill in the visuals in. I myself. feel pretty confident with this movie. ‘3’ is still a bit dark. It’s way too long.
“I haven’t really turned my energy into a disciplined cutting process on this yet. But I know I have the performance. This is the important thing. I did the whole capture. I did most of the shooting live. I still owe a bit to some of the adult characters. We were more concerned with the aging of the children.
Cameron said they had to shoot the first two films before her star actor Timothée Chalamet grew a beard.

He added, “We mixed the programs for ‘2” and “3”, depending on the types of scenes and environments. I said, let’s treat it like it’s a six hour miniseries and we only go to frankfurt once.
“We’re going to shoot all the scenes from ‘2’ and ‘3’ at the same time. That was more or less the motive. The availability of actors was also a problem. Whatever had to be done with a specific actor, we did all the scenes of “2” and “3” together – and a bit of “4”.
“Because once again I had to shoot the children. They are allowed to age six years in the middle of the story on page 25 of the movie “4”. So I needed everything before, and then everything after, we’ll do it later.
