Featured cast: Suriya, Priyanka Arulmohan, Sathyaraj, Saranya Ponvannan, Vinay Rai & Ensemble.
What’s good: That Suriya works hard enough even for scripts that don’t deserve it.
What’s wrong : That Suriya is slowly turning into Akshay Kumar with his choices and that’s not a good thing. Besides, who forcefully spoon-feeds emotions these days? Even Ekta Kapoor has become subtle.
Toilet break: You will.
Watch or not? : At your peril. It’s literally someone imagining what would happen if we took Suriya from Jai Bhim and Suriya from Soorarai Pottru and put them in a blender. The preparation is not at all tasty.
Tongue: Tamil (with subtitles).
Available on: netflix
Duration: 148 minutes
Kannabiran (Suriya) a lawyer just one fine day ends up killing 7 men. Why is he doing this? Begins Etharkkum Thunindhavan. We understand that the powerful have brought hell to a rather bustling city with their atrocities, and Kannabiran takes charge of “cleansing up” his society.
Review of Etharkkum Thunindhavan’s film: analysis of the script
Social drama is the genre that is trending the most right now. Not that he’s bad or that he doesn’t deserve to be where he is. But when filmmakers with huge sums of money and strong backing make films that portray them as social satires that are confused with their own tone, that’s where the genre is exploited. Add Suriya to it and the budding approach of this product becomes crystal clear.
Etharkkum Thunindhavan is a story about the atrocities committed against women in a region divided by two clans in southern India. Writer-director Pandiraj presents this setup and a kingdom that once respected and worshiped women. Cut to, half of the area turned cruel and started harassing their ladies overnight. The tone of the film is so confusing that you don’t know exactly what it means. Does he connect reality to mythology (like Karnan)? Does it indicate atrocities not only in terms of caste but also gender? When exactly does the film take place?
The star of Suriya starts at the end and takes all the running time to tell you why the ending. He molds his leader as if he were a Romeo on the street busy showing his mastery to solve anything. Suddenly, you are told that he is a lawyer and that he is prestigious. But that actually has no impact on the story. He could be an engineer and everything could be the same. The urge to have Suriya because Jai Bhim worked and also to make a lawyer out of him because the “recall value” is so uncomfortable and unsettling.
Humor is introduced at points where it is not meant to be. The shift between emotions is so sudden and abrupt that nothing makes sense after a certain point. Speaking of common sense, why does the villain played by Vinay Rai seem to spend all his evenings in a Mexican city and not in a rural village? It’s so flat that it starts to look funny after a point.
There are, however, many logical questions. Why does the whole village seem like technology hasn’t touched them yet and the bad guy has a lab that’s a low-budget replica of NASA’s research facility? If Kannabiran kills these 7 men behind closed doors and makes sure that no one knows what happened, who is commenting live on the number of victims of his mother? How does a computer unplugged from the outlet start to burn after being shot by a gun?
Etharkkum Thunindhavan Movie Review: Star Performances
Suriya needs to stop making movies just because they convey a message. The formula worked for the last two, but the last one is a classic dud. The actor is so honest in his performance, I felt bad when he burst into not one but several dance numbers set up in oblivion for no reason.
Priyanka Arulmohan undergoes such a sudden and random transformation that she goes off track after a while. The same goes for everyone else involved.
Vinay Rai plays a villain who looks so brutal that even guys might want to completely button up their shirts. But when he comes face to face with the hero, he is downed in exactly 3 punches.
Review of the film Etharkkum Thunindhavan: direction, music
Pandiraj is so obsessed with his story that he forcefully spoon feeds the emotions after a while. You don’t have the power to decide what to feel. The climax is so weird that nothing makes sense. Although it is designed to be moving and overwhelming, it only manages to trigger one emotion, WHAT? (in a shocking way).
The music has no impact.
Etharkkum Thunindhavan Movie Review: The Last Word
People expect a lot from Suriya who was almost in the running for the Oscars this year. But it’s certainly not even close to the least expected things. Etharkkum Thunindhavan looks like a half-baked movie that lucked out with the cast.
