Acclaimed actor and director Andy Serkis will finally begin bringing George Orwell’s dystopian novel Animal Farm to life in an animated adaptation.
Acclaimed actor and director Andy Serkis will finally make an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian short story, farm animal. Serkis is best known for his acting roles as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot, but he also worked behind the camera. In 2017, Serkis made his directorial debut with the biopic Breathe. For a decade now, Serkis has planned to direct farm animaland now this project is finally moving forward.

Nicholas Stoller adapted the screenplay for the project, which will partner with Aniventure and Serkis’ company, The Imaginarium. Serkis has been working for nearly a decade to get this project off the ground, sharing his hope of bringing Orwell’s powerful, humorous and emotional tale to life in an extraordinary way. Orwell’s classic dystopian short story, published in 1945, sees a group of farm animals rise up against their human owner for social equality. Given Serkis’ background and his ability to play such dynamic roles as Gollum or Supreme Leader Snoke, he seems like the perfect person to lead the project. Serkis will likely draw from all of his various personification experiences in addition to showcasing his directorial chops on the back of movies like Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: let there be carnage. While Serkis was initially partnered with Netflix to bring the project to fruition, it appears the two entities have gone their separate ways.
