Blue Beetle movie still on track despite WB cancellations


Despite the cancellation of many projects by Warner Bros. Discovery, DC’s new Blue Beetle movie is reportedly still on track for an August 2023 release.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the future superhero film directed by Angel Manuel Soto, is still scheduled for release in August 2023. The fifteenth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will star Xolo Maridueña as the titular superhero, alongside Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez and Adriana Barraza to name a few.

word of blue beetleThe security comes after the announcement that the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslov, has put aside the long-awaited bat girl film, which would have seen Leslie Grace don the cape and cowl. She would have starred alongside Brendan Fraser, JK Simmons and Michael Keaton, who was set to reprise his role as Batman from the Tim Burton film series. The film – which had a $90 million price tag – was canceled as DC wanted to put more emphasis on theatrical event films, while bat girl was to head straight to streaming on HBO Max.

“We’re going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release a movie until it’s ready,” Zaslov said. “DC is something we can improve on.” Similarly, on August 2, it was also announced that a sequel to Scoob! title Scoob! Holiday destination was shelved by Warner Bros. Discovery. The film’s director, Tony Cervone, later spoke about the cancellation, saying the film was “virtually done.”

As for the DC Extended Universe, fans can still expect to see two new movies later this year in the form of black adam and Shazam! Fury of the gods. Both projects are slated for the October and December theatrical windows respectively. Next year will see the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and the flashthe latter featuring embattled actor Ezra Miller, who was recently arrested for burglary.

“We saw [The Flash, Black Adam and Shazam 2]. We think they’re great and we think we can make them even better,” Zaslav said of the films. Despite Miller’s recent arrest and past incidents with law enforcement, the film’s release is still scheduled for June 2023.

blue beetle is targeting an August 2023 release, but Warner Bros. has yet to provide a specific release date.
