The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie features thieves, scarlet wizards, and a journey to Neverwinter on the Sword Coast.
For fans of Dungeons & Dragons, 2023 could be a great year. With a new movie coming up, many are wondering how it will work. Considering the failure of the first movie and how much people love the game, this new movie has a lot going for it. The film is still about a year away, but important information has been released on Dungeons & Dragonsplot and casting. There’s a lot to look forward to, with familiar names and Hollywood stars.
For those who are not already playing, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game that is almost 50 years old. Over the past few years, the game has seen a huge resurgence thanks to several popular streaming shows like critical role and The adventure zone and more inclusive books and communities. Plus, the pandemic hasn’t hurt the hobby at all, especially since playing virtually is much easier than in the past. In fact, the game saw its sales increase by 30% in 2020, and 2021 has been a great year for new book releases.
Latest news, 2023 D&D movie stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Judge Smith. Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong and Daisy Head also joined the cast. It looks like Hugh Grant will be playing the big bad, Forge Fletcher. Pine and Rodriguez will be part of the classic adventure party for four. Lillis will appear as Doric, and Wong is expected to play Dralas.
It was written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein respectively. Speaking of the movie, they said, “We want it to be fun. It’s not a full-fledged comedy, but it’s an action-fantasy film with a lot of comedic elements.[.]”
The film wrapped up filming in August 2021, so it’s in post-production and will likely get a big dose of CGI (there are dragons, after all). The filmmakers also registered the plot with the US Copyright Office. The summary indicates that it will be an ex-Harper turned thief, presumably played by Pine, who escapes from prison with his barbaric partner, presumably Rodriguez. He also says that a druid and a “talentless wizard” will complete the party and help them get revenge on the crook who got them arrested. The crook, likely played by Grant, used the group’s heist money to settle down as Lord of Neverwinter and has a shady connection to a red wizard with despicable plans.
The summary presents some elements of D&D traditions. The Harpers are a beneficent spy ring. The Red Wizards of Thay are usually evil necromancers who want the power they once had. Neverwinter is also an important location on the Sword Coast. To capture the atmosphere of the city, the directors shot the film in Iceland. Daley has come a long way since he starred in the Freaks and Geeks episode “Discos and dragons”, and as a lover of D&D, he will certainly bring something unique to the film.
