Emma Stone for Spider-Gwen movie at Sony Rumor

With the massive success of Spider-Man: No Path Home, both Sony Pictures and Marvel studios proved that their universe is big enough for many characters. As well, Tthe incredible spider-man series is in the midst of a kind of rebirth. People are realizing that maybe they’ve been a little too harsh on these movies. Sure, they have issues (what movie doesn’t?), But the kids who grew up with these movies love them as much as any Spidey movie. So whether it’s a real rumor or just a good guess, Sony Pictures wants Emma Stone for Spider-Gwen movie. There are reasons to both believe and be skeptical of this rumor, if only for the mercurial nature of Hollywood contracts. Still, let’s see where it comes from and if it’s true.

It’s not just the success of the latest live-action movie. The success of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which presented Spider-Gwen as a central character, also plays a role in Sony Pictures’ decision-making. Still, the desire to build a franchise as cheaply as possible (especially in the box office climate of 2021) gives us pause. If Sony Pictures is to make a Spider-Gwen live-action movie for the purposes of a new franchise, would they go with it? Emma Stone and her interpretation of Gwen? There is also the Peter Parker problem, in particular that one would expect them to bring back Andrew Garfield just to kill him.

Yet if the past decade of superhero movies and TV shows has proven anything, that’s it whatever is possible. Especially with the resurgence of love for the Spider-Man universe with Emma Stone as Gwen, why not try to capitalize on it with a new movie?

Let the speculation begin!

Emma Stone for Spider-Gwen Live-Action Sony Movie – Why Rumor Might Be True

Before I could write about fantasy and stories on a daily basis, I was an old regular journalist. So, that means any story is as good as its source. In the entertainment business, especially for these large franchises, there is a cottage industry of online leaks at Twitter and Reddit with a mixed bag of success. There are those people who are wrong, of course. They are easy to spot. There are also those who have a legitimate source and report what they are told in the most factual way possible. Finally, there are those who only make educated guesses, including those built from other confirmed leaks and rumors. In case Sony wants Emma Stone for a Spider-Gwen movie, the rumor comes from two specific leaks.

One of them is My time to shine hello (MTSH), an anonymous leaker on Twitter and the most active on Reddit. Their track record is a mix of near-accurate predictions and wild speculation seemingly based on other leaks. To be clear, I’m not suggesting that MTSH just makes up stuff, but rather that they seem to be less judicious than some about the rumors they are spreading. In this case, MTSH is only co-signing the rumor that Sony Pictures wants Emma Stone for a live-action Spider-Gwen movie.

The original source is the Twitter user @EdwinSRP, who started tweeting in November 2021. Looking at the tweets, this person was right about everything. (It’s possible that they’re suppressing false predictions, but there’s no evidence such as phantom replies to a deleted tweet or anything.) Plus, all EdwinSRP is saying is that Sony is open to the idea, which means that while discussions are even going on with the actor they are in very preliminary stages.

Why a Sony Ghost Spider Movie Could Actually Be Much Different

In 2018, Marvel Comics decided to change name from Spider-Gwen to Ghost Spider. If Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment are hoping to keep the character branding consistent, they might want to kick off a franchise with a new, let’s face it, younger actor.

Okay, clarification and warning. At 33, Emma Stone is perfectly capable of playing Spider-Gwen or Ghost Spider or Gwenpool. She is a recognizable name and has a history with the character of Gwen Stacy. There is no maximum age limit for a female superhero character. Betty White could be one.

Still, it’s possible Sony Pictures will pull a page out of Marvel Studios’ playbook. Rather than go for a big name for a famous Spider-Verse character, they could choose a younger and relatively unknown character in the role. This would both establish this Ghost Spider is a whole new thing, and Sony Pictures would save money on actors’ salaries. They might also want to lock an actor who has fewer options than Stone into a long-term deal. And as much as the Incredible movies are experiencing a renaissance, there is no guarantee that goodwill lasts beyond No way home.

Another reason why the rumor that Sony Pictures wants Emma Stone for a Spider-Gwen movie might not be true is because of diversity. For all the classic spider-man love we see, there are people calling for more stories with Miles Morales. For example, Sony Pictures could present a Ghost Spider movie starring a non-white actor as Gwen Stacy.

Sony is also said to have plans underway for Spider woman and silk. They also want to do TV shows, like Project Jackpot reported. There’s an appetite for Spider-Verse characters, but for how much?

Verdict: Sony Pictures rumor wants Emma Stone for Spider-Gwen movie is plausible, not certain

As for the veracity of this rumor, we say it sounds like an educated guess or one of the many options that Sony is considering. the the original source seems to have a solid track record to be right. The second source is less solid, but still not one that we can reject out of hand. Yet, we don’t put that report on par with any of the Hollywood trades or other sites with a stronger sourcing track record. Still, if they later report something similar, we must note that at least one of these leakers appears to have a true insider source at Sony or Marvel.

A Spider-Gwen movie starring Emma Stone makes sense to Sony on the one hand. She’s an established actress who plays a version of a character that audiences know well. Spider-Man: No Path Home has shown that there is still an appetite for spider stories outside of the MCU. Still, it does give the impression that it would be in the very early stages and the type of project that can fail for a number of reasons. It’s also possible that Stone herself has left this experience and wants to do different things as an actor.
