Every Sam Raimi Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

2.Spiderman 2 (2004)

Spiderman 2 is the best and most heartfelt superhero movie ever made, brimming with romantic complications and human trials. Raimi returns to the same world with more passion, ingenuity and craftsmanship, delivering a dynamic tonal range that swings from comedy to drama to horror in a jiffy.

Things don’t go well for Peter Parker (played with rosy-eyed silliness by Tobey Maguire). He has no money, his grades are going down, and his personal relationships are down the toilet. Not to mention that New York has a problem with Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina)! With all of these obstacles, Raimi relies on a fundamental obstacle: Peter has a crisis of confidence and, ironically, does not fit in, which causes him to lose his powers. On the cusp of adulthood, Peter must ask himself who he is, why he does what he does, and whether or not he is on the right track. What young true believer can’t relate to that?

But what would a Spider-Man movie be without a few exploits? Raimi and Molina create an all-timer with Doc Ock, a likeable villain with some of the most compelling special effects ever committed to screen. This train fight is not pre-vis. It’s Sam Raimi who works with his camera, his effects and his actors to create a grounded world in which the fantastic can reside. From start to finish, the film’s effects, its screenplay by Oscar winner Alvin Sargent, and the cast are still as fresh and energetic as they were in June 2004. I hate to say it, but they don’t make them like that. .
