Black Panther

Black Panther arrived in 2018 with a simple pitch and a director, Ryan Coogler, who clearly had bigger ambitions for the action genre than the logline suggested. You can tell a lot about a movie from its tagline, and “Long live the king.” gives away the game in the best way.

At its core, the plot goes like this: King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne by factions within his own country as well as without. Using powers reserved to Wakandan kings, T’Challa assumes the Black Panther mantle to join with ex-girlfriend Nakia, the queen-mother, his princess-kid sister, members of the Dora Milaje (the Wakandan ‘special forces’) and an American secret agent, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war. The chemistry between Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, and it shows in every shared scene.

Peel back the surface and Black Panther is really interested in something bigger than its genre trappings. There’s a clear preoccupation with africa here, and it’s paired with aftercreditsstinger in a way that gives the whole thing more staying power than a plot summary suggests. You can also feel duringcreditsstinger and marvel cinematic universe (mcu) working in the background, quietly shaping how later scenes land even when they’re not the explicit focus.

On paper, action, adventure and science fiction covers the basics of what Black Panther is doing. In practice, the film spends just as much time subverting those expectations as fulfilling them, which is a big part of why it’s held up.

Ryan Coogler’s handling of tone throughout Black Panther deserves particular credit — it would be easy for a film juggling this many ideas to feel scattered, but the direction keeps everything pointed in the same direction. Look further down the cast list and you’ll find Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, each handed at least one scene that earns its place in the finished film.

The runtime, 135 minutes, is used efficiently — there’s very little fat on this one. Behind the scenes, Marvel Studios backed the production, giving Ryan Coogler the resources to fully realize the vision. The economics alone are worth mentioning: a $200,000,000 budget turned into $1,349,926,083 in worldwide grosses.

This is a solid pick for anyone who wants their action with a little more substance than usual — put it on for a night when you actually want to pay attention. It’s the kind of film that rewards a rewatch, revealing small choices on a second pass that get lost the first time through. It’s a detail easy to miss on a first viewing of Black Panther, but it rewards anyone paying close attention. That kind of craftsmanship is easy to take for granted until you watch a lesser film try the same thing and fail. Little touches like that are why the film keeps finding new defenders long after its initial release. It’s the sort of small decision that separates a good action film from a merely competent one. None of it feels accidental — Black Panther is the product of choices made with real intention, and it plays that way from start to finish.
