When Bong Joon Ho sat down to make “Parasite”, the goal was clearly to deliver something that sticks with an audience long after the credits roll. It is the kind of film that tends to outlast whatever else came out the same year.
“Act like you own the place.” That is the tagline, and it does a surprisingly honest job of setting the tone before a single frame plays. Much of the momentum comes from Song Kang-ho as Kim Ki-taek, Lee Sun-kyun as Park Dong-ik, Cho Yeo-jeong as Yeon-kyo, whose scenes together set the stakes without over-explaining them. The comedy and drama and thriller framing gives the story a clear emotional lane to run in, and it rarely strays from it without good reason.
What separates it from a lot of other comedy and drama and thriller titles is restraint — it does not rush to show its hand, letting small character beats do work that louder films would hand off to spectacle.
Sound design and score work quietly in the background here, doing the kind of unglamorous work that only gets noticed when it is missing.
Thematically, the film keeps returning to class differences, con artist, dark comedy, domestic worker, family — recurring ideas that TMDB’s own tagging picks up on and that show up in how the story is structured scene to scene.
Further down the call sheet, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Lee Jung-eun round things out, and the film is generous enough with screen time that none of them feel like an afterthought.
If you are watching with other people, this is also a solid pick for a group — the comedy and drama and thriller elements give everyone something to react to without requiring a ton of setup or prior context.
Bong Joon Ho’s direction keeps the pacing tight without ever feeling rushed, running 133 minutes, it moves briskly enough that the time genuinely flies, while Song Kang-ho and Lee Sun-kyun and Cho Yeo-jeong bring enough conviction to make the smaller scenes land just as hard as the big ones, the production values, backed by Barunson E&A, hold up scene after scene.
Made for roughly $11,363,000, it eventually brought in $257,591,776 at the global box office, the kind of return that turns a film into a genre reference point rather than a one-and-done watch.
Whether it holds up on a second viewing is really the test for a film like this, and here it does — knowing where the story is headed only makes it easier to notice the groundwork being laid early on.
Coming out in 2019, it did not need a massive marketing campaign to find its audience, and that slow-burn word-of-mouth path is often a better predictor of staying power than an opening-weekend spike ever is.
For viewers deciding whether to press play, the short version is: this delivers on what it promises, does not overstay its 133 minutes, and rewards anyone willing to meet it halfway. Go in with reasonable expectations and let the film set its own pace.
