Not every film needs to reinvent its genre to be worth your time, and “Your Name.”, an animation and drama and romance entry, proves the point. It does not take long to understand why people keep bringing it up.

Everything the film wants you to feel is right there in its tagline: “Separated by distance, connected by fate.” Ryunosuke Kamiki as Taki Tachibana (voice), Mone Kamishiraishi as Mitsuha Miyamizu (voice), Ryo Narita as Katsuhiko Teshigawara (voice) headline the cast, and their dynamic is what the film keeps circling back to whenever the plot needs an emotional anchor. Fans of animation and drama and romance stories will recognize the shape of things early, but the execution is confident enough to keep it from feeling like a retread.

Genre fans will clock the influences quickly, but the film is confident enough in its own identity that homage never tips into imitation.

Sound design and score work quietly in the background here, doing the kind of unglamorous work that only gets noticed when it is missing.
