, which follows Andy and Charlie McGee, a feather and his daughter on the run from a government agency known as The Shop due to their superhuman abilities. Andy has telepathic powers, while his daughter, Charlie, is a powerful pyrokinetic who can ignite any area in seconds. “I play the father, and Ryan plays my daughter Charlie, and then my wife is played by Sydney Lemmon,” said Efron, who plays Andy. She has these emotional triggers that cause her to set things on fire, and it’s a super power that’s kind of not really developed, and we don’t know whether to stop her from using it or encourage him to learn how to use it. There’s a government agency chasing her to use her in a nefarious way, to turn her into some kind of weapon.
The role is also the first time that Efron, who has starred in films like musical high school, Baywatch and Neighbors— played a father. “I haven’t thought about it much,” Efron told Ellen DeGeneres in a May 2022 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show about playing a first-time parent. “And then when we started shooting the movie, I had a two-week quarantine…and when I came out of quarantine, we started filming that Monday, so that was a pretty quick intro to the movie, and all of a sudden I had this girl in front of me. He continued, “We had a pretty heavy father-daughter scene from the get-go, and I realized I was significantly under-prepared for this part. I didn’t know what I was doing.
Although Efron had a great time with his on-screen daughter, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, he confirmed to DeGeneres that Fire starter didn’t inspire him to have kids of his own anytime soon. “I think it was a good dose to discourage myself for as long as necessary. I have a little more growth to do, probably,” he said.
