Robbery in Delhi: Seven people, including two women, were arrested.
New Delhi:
Thieves posing as Mumbai police looted hundreds of thousands of rupees from a Delhi business last week. Seven people, including two women, who were arrested in connection with the incident said they were inspired by the Bollywood film ‘Special 26‘, police said.
One of the defendants was Sanjay Manocha, chairman of Nuh City Council in Haryana, who had contested with the support of the BJP and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), sources said.
The theft took place at a welfare business run by Vijay Yadav at Netaji Subhas Place last Wednesday, said Usha Rangarani, DCP, North West Delhi.
Four people, including a woman, arrived at his office at around 12:30 p.m. and identified themselves as officers of the Mumbai Police, police have complained. They were carrying what appeared to be Mumbai Police ID cards.
They seized the mobile phones of the employees present and demanded Rs 20 lakh, police said. The complainant, at gunpoint, was told to call his wife and arrange the money. His wife somehow arranged Rs 5.75 lakh and handed it over to one of the defendants, a female, who was waiting outside his office.
They also collected his bank and card details from him, police said.
The thieves left after five hours with the money, cell phones and other things, locking the employees inside the office.
Using CCTV footage, police identified one of the accused as Prashant Kumar Patil from Libaspur and took him into custody. Rs 2.5 lakh was recovered from him and upon questioning he revealed that two women and five men were involved in the crime.
Based on his contributions, the two women, Jyoti and Neha Kashyap – both residents of Delhi, were arrested. Subsequently, four others – Zahid alias Guru Ji, Sanjay Manocha, Faisal and Imran – were also arrested in various parts of Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Majid, another defendant, is on the run.
The defendants admitted during questioning that they were inspired by the ‘Special 26‘ film to plan the flight. Zahid and Prashant were the main conspirators of the robbery, police said, adding that a search was underway to find Majid.
In ‘Special 26‘, featuring Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, a team of con artists posing as CBI agents carry out fake raids and pull off robberies.
