If you’re a movie fan, you may have had a MoviePass subscription in the past. Subscribers paid a small monthly or annual fee in order to watch an unlimited number of films in the cinema. But the affair did not last long. In September 2019, the company shut down and unlimited movie tickets became a thing of the past.
Recently, we talked about the return of MoviePass. Could we get cheap unlimited movie tickets again soon? Maybe not. But a new approach to the service could be attractive to moviegoers and could be more profitable for the brand and advertisers.
MoviePass has made movie nights more affordable
Unless you go to the movies on discount days or catch a matinee show, it can be pricey to watch the latest blockbuster in theaters. This is especially true if you also spend money at the concession stand.
A few years ago, MoviePass made it more affordable for ordinary people to see the latest movies. You can become a MoviePass subscriber and see a movie every day for around $10 a month, which is about the same price as a movie ticket.
While the membership was great in theory and offered frequent moviegoers a way to save money, the venture didn’t last long. MoviePass was shut down in September 2019 because it was not a profitable business plan.
Unlike other membership-based services that many consumers pay and forget, MoviePass was popular and members used it often. After all, watching a two-hour movie several times a week is a lot more fun than going to the gym to exercise, isn’t it?
MoviePass will be relaunched in 2022
Former MoviePass founder and CEO Stacy Spikes bought the company out of bankruptcy in hopes of reviving the brand. But it won’t be the same business as before, and a subscription won’t offer unlimited movie tickets. The revived MoviePass system will run on redeemable credits that roll over month-to-month.
Spikes currently runs a game company called PreShow and hopes to bring some of its features to MoviePass. PreShow allows users to unlock in-game currency for free by watching ads. The platform has technology that verifies that users are actively viewing advertisements.
Likewise, when MoviePass is relaunched, the platform will allow users to buy, sell and trade movie viewing credits. Members will also be able to earn credits by watching advertisements. Matinee showings will cost less credits, while in-demand movies and popular showtimes will cost more.
Although MoviePass no longer promises unlimited movie ticket subscriptions, the company will provide users with a fun and engaging way to purchase and earn tickets for the latest movies.
Spikes plans to launch the new MoviePass to beta users this summer. Hopefully later in 2022 the service will be available to the public.
