A first photo has been released with the full cast reveal for My Father’s Dragon, a new animated film in preparation at Netflix. From the five-time Oscar-nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon (Kels’ secret, song of the sea, wolf walkers) and Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (The breadwinner), My Father’s Dragon is inspired by the original children’s book by author Ruth Stiles Gannett. “Struggling to cope after moving to town with his mother, Elmer (Jacob Tremblay) flees in search of Wild Island and a young dragon named Boris (Gaten Matarazzo) waiting to be rescued. ‘Elmer introduces him to ferocious beasts, a mysterious island and the friendship of a lifetime.
Netflix also revealed the full cast of the film in honor of World Book Day this Saturday. Starring Jacob Tremblay and Gaten Matarazzo in the lead roles, the film features the voices of Golshifteh Farahani, Dianne Wiest, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer, Alan Cumming, Yara Shahidi, Jackie Earle Haley, Mary Kay Place, Leighton Meester, Spence Moore II, Adam Brody, Charlyne Yi, Maggie Lincoln and Jack Smith with Whoopi Goldberg and Ian McShane.
Nora Twomey is directing from a screenplay by Meg LeFauve (Upside down) with an on-screen story by John Morgan and LeFauve. Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures produced with Paul Young of Cartoon Saloon. Executive producers include Cartoon Saloon’s LeFauve, Morgan, Tomm Moore and Gerry Shirren, and Parallel Films’ Alan Moloney and Ruth Coady.
In a statement, Twomey praised the entire cast and crew for all of their collaborative work on the animated feature, as well as Netflix for how the company “excels in celebrating all sorts of stories. The director said:
“Our Cartoon Saloon actors, animators and artists worked together to create this film, inspired by Ruth Stiles Gannett’s amazing book. We were drawn in by a desire to tell a very special story of friendship, adventure and true bravery. I fell in love with storytelling as a kid and Netflix is great at celebrating all kinds of stories, through different styles and distinct voices. It gave me the opportunity to look through a beautiful lens and I am excited to share what I see with our audiences around the world.”
