Sony has set Dakota Johnson’s Marvel movie starring Madame Web for a July 2023 summer release date, just a month after Spider-Verse 2.
Sony Pictures has finally set a July 2023 release date for Madame Web. Created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr. in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, Madame Web is often depicted as a blind, paralyzed elderly woman, hooked up to a life support system created by her husband. She also possesses the ability of clairvoyance and telepathy. Fifty Shades of gray star Dakota Johnson is set to star as the titular character, here reimagined as a younger incarnation, with Euphoria Breakout Sydney Sweeney also stars in an undisclosed role.
Madame Web is part of the Sony Spider-Man universe, which so far includes Venom, Venom: let there be carnageand the recently published Morbius. Not much is known about the project, although the character has been described as similar to Doctor Strange. The multiverse playing a big part in Spider-Man: No Coming Home and used for the credits ending sequence of Morbiusa character like Madame Web, who in the comics has a connection to the multiverse, makes her an important character in Sony’s plans to grow their franchise.
Sony Pictures announced Madame Web is now planned for a July 7, 2023 release date. The film had previously been announced but not dated on the studio’s release schedule. Madame Web will be directed by SJ Clarkson (Dexter) from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius).
Madame Web is one of three Spider-Man related films Sony plans to release in 2023. The year kicks off with Kraven the hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson on January 13, 2023. The second is the recently delayed Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse; in the same announcement, Sony pushed the animated film back from October 2022 to June 2, 2023, making it arrive just a month before Madame Web. Sony gave the Johnson-led film the exact same release date as Spider-Man: Homecoming had in 2017. It grew to gross $880.2 million worldwide.
Madame Web will face fierce competition when released, as it opens the following week Indiana Jones 5 and the week before Mission: Impossible 7. July is a busy month which also produced the James Gunn Coyote vs. Acme and Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer. To end the month of July, Marvel Studios Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will certainly nibble away at the profits of Madame Web. Sony Pictures needs Madame Web a hit after the critical and financial disappointment of Morbius, and the decision to give the film a preferred summer date suggests the studio is confident of its chances. As Sony’s first female-led Marvel film, Madame Web has the potential to stir up a lot of intrigue by July 2023, so keep an eye out for this one over the coming months.
