What will the movie Luther be about – and what’s the story so far?

Elba announced that the film would be more “international” than the television series. “I’m really excited for Luther the Movie because it’s a step up from the TV show,” he told the British breakfast show. This morning. ‘The TV show is amazing [and] fans will hopefully come to the film, which just has a lot more scale and is a bit more international.

What we do know is that the movie’s increased budget will mean bigger action scenes, more scale, and the strong possibility that at some point Idris Elba will walk away from a massive explosion.

‘Having delivered every episode of Luther on ridiculously small budgets, [we’ve been able] to have a bigger canvas and a bigger budget to tell the kind of stories we’ve always wanted to be able to tell,” screenwriter and Luther creator Neil Cross said RadioTimes.com in 2021. “And we were really given the opportunity – while remaining absolutely true.”

“We really peel the onion here because we had the time and the scale to do it,” Elba said recently. Empire Review. ‘It also gives (screenwriter) Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he’s doing, what the landscape is.

Judging by these early stills from the film, Luther-land won’t just be the mean streets of London, but snowier, colder climes too. “We’re getting out of the gritty streets of London, we’re getting out of that a bit,” Elba adds. ‘And that’s great. It is as if we are now entering a life different from the Luther experience.

But don’t expect too much of a departure from the gnarly procedural formula of the BBC series. “I wanted to make sure that even though we had a larger budget, [we didn’t] distort the parameters of Luther-land too much,” says Elba. “We amplify the action and amplify the stakes. But [Season 3’s] man moment under the bed? It doesn’t cost you a lot of money. Those moments are still intact.

And, as the actor-producer points out, if the scale is larger, the man himself does not change. “Obviously you can be a little bolder in storylines and upscale,” he says, “but John Luther will always be John Luther.”
