HIS latest Top Gun blockbuster still flies high at the box office, breaking records and winning praise from fans including William and Kate.
But Tom Cruise is looking to outdo himself once again with his next smash, landing a nod of support from the only organization even higher than the future king. . . the church.
Tom returns to London to film his next Mission: Impossible 8, the latest thriller in the long-running franchise which includes 2011’s Ghost Protocol.
He is expected to set the bar even higher.
And in an extremely rare decision by the Church, Tom was given exclusive permission to film inside Westminster Abbey, the country’s most important religious monument.
A source from the film tells me, “Tom is really on a roll right now in terms of getting bigger and better. There is literally no compromise.
“Nothing but the biggest and best will do.”
“So when he wanted to film inside a church for the new movie Mission, it had to be Westminster Abbey. They turn down almost every request, so it’s an amazing nod to Tom and the production team to say yes.
“It will make for an amazing filming location and set the tone for how big this movie will be. The budget is huge, of course, but the ambitions are even bigger.
Tom only recently finished work on the as-yet-unreleased seventh installment in the Mission franchise, meeting co-star Hayley Atwell in the process.
But the film was beset with delays and hassles thanks to Covid restrictions, which saw sets closed for a month and Tom stuck in Italy for the first weeks of the pandemic.
A source adds: “The whole team, Tom and Chris McQuarrie the director, can’t wait to get going. They had so many setbacks on the last movie that they just want this one to break the mold and the success of Top Gun. 2 really kicked things off for Tom.
Mission 7, the first of a two-part installment subtitled Dead Reckoning, will now be released in July next year, having cost almost £300million to make.
But if Top Gun is anything to go by, they’ll get their money back in days.
Here’s hoping this latest movie breaks the mold again. This is what cinema needs right now.
Abba traveling around the world
ABBA has thrilled fans with its groundbreaking digital scene – and now plans to take it around the world.
Band member Benny Andersson’s son Ludvig, who is producer of ABBA Voyage show, reveals the plan is to keep the purpose-built venue in east London and build more in the area. ‘foreign.
He said, “Where would it be? I would love to go to places that might not be the most obvious.
“It would be nice to take him to places that aren’t always visited by large groups.
“The dream would be to have one somewhere in South America, one somewhere in Southeast Asia, one in North America.
“Who knows? But that’s the plan and we’re already working on it.
ABBA Voyage opened in May and sees the realistic “Abbatars” of band members Benny, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad perform a 20-song set.
Ludvig also revealed that while the band was recording the extravaganza, they performed a lot more of their hits in front of the cameras – so the show will be able to keep changing even after they die.
In the August issue of Retro Pop magazine, which was just released, Ludvig added, “We’ve done more songs than we knew we were going to use. So there is more material.
“If this continues and people continue to want to come see it, we plan to change a song or update the show, because it’s also fun to do.”
OLIVIA RODRIGO has just wrapped up her stellar sold-out UK tour – but could she be spending more time here with a British dude soon?
The Good 4 U singer joined English actor Sebastian Croft as she left a party on Thursday night, following her performance at the Eventim Apollo in London.
He recently shot to fame on the Netflix teen series Heartstopper and wore a t-shirt with Olivia’s face on it as they walked to a car.
Earlier this year, the American singer, who wore a cream mini dress for her night out, was linked to DJ Zack Bia after going on a string of dates. But he appeared to deny it was an object when asked about it last month.
Now that her tour is over, Olivia is set to start working on the sequel to last year’s No.1 album Sour.
A few love interests should provide some inspiration.
Be twerk, not pissed off
MEGAN THEE STALLION called for calm during her performance at the festival and urged the crowd to stop fighting, saying, “We’re supposed to twerk.”
Stopping her set, she added, “Before we go on, this little section here. . . We lit up but you like rocking too much. I don’t like what is happening. Why do they grow?
“We do hot girl shit, we don’t fight. It’s not a dangerous set, it doesn’t call for any of that. We are supposed to twerk.
Megan took to the stage in Finsbury Park in north London last night and told the crowd: ‘I need you to give my girls some space to shake their a**e.’
Rapper Hot Girl Summer, who received her biggest applause when she showed off her own twerking skills, added: lit.
Earlier, singer-songwriter Mahalia addressed a message to the crowd: “Girls, remember you don’t have to wear a bra.”
Next, Love Island’s Antigoni was seen being turned away by security after attempting to enter the pit in front of the main stage for the Giveon set. Annoying.
Ray of Hope by Leigh-Anne
LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK has tapped fellow chart star Raye to work on her debut album.
The singer-songwriter has written tracks for Beyonce and Ellie Goulding, but was in the studio with Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne in London on Thursday.
Raye posted this photo of them on Instagram and wrote: “Today was beautiful. I’m so proud of this woman.
The feeling was mutual, Leigh-Anne saying, “You are a FORCEEEE. Your talent is so inspiring.
Raye also wrote the track Told You So for Little Mix’s fifth album, LM5.
Alien Fins, Harry
HARRY STYLES looked like a straight kipper as he played with a fish on his head.
He joked on stage in Belgium picking up a fan’s hat and wearing it while singing his hit As It Was on Thursday night.
It’s OK on stage, but he might get some stares if he goes out and trouts it.
