Hot off the heels of box office triumph with Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski promises similar “behind-the-scenes action” on his next race car flick.
Kosinski says he will use effects created solely by the camera – to make viewers feel like they’re driving at 200 mph, in the film with the working title of Formula One – starring Brad Pitt and co-produced by seven-time world champion racing driver Lewis Hamilton.
“It is certain that seeing people react to a film filmed behind closed doors, captured in an authentic way, like Superior gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by the public,” he told The Wrap.
“It’s almost funny for me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. The younger ones hardly saw much of it. They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a great movies tool that when you shoot something for real, it looks innovative. This is exactly the approach for Formula One …to shoot the real races and cars and capture them. It will be a huge challenge, but exciting for me.
The film will see Pitt play the role of a pilot who comes out of retirement to mentor a promising rookie. Ehren Kruger is writing the screenplay, while Superior gunJerry Bruckheimer produces alongside Plan B.
Although there is a long list of racing car movies, US interest in the sport has been piqued by the success of the Netflix fly-on-the-wall series. Formula 1: drive to survivean intimate look at the battles between riders and managers on and off the track.
Apple has won a battle for the rights to Formula 1 and has committed to a theatrical release before putting it on its streaming service.
Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick is on track to become the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career, with a box office now exceeding $800 million worldwide since its release late last month.
