Warner Bros. executive Toby Emmerich has a simple secret to explain the studio’s recent success with The Batman.
Toby Emmerich is the current President and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, which gives him control over every feature film project from Warner Bros. Building on the success of The BatmanEmmerich explained his secret to running the studio to Deadline. “The secret of cinema is quality,” he said. “It’s the best business strategy for motion pictures and superhero movies. Movies don’t all have to have the same tone, or interweave with other DC movies, or have an Easter egg that puts up another movie. Quality is the most important factor for a studio, and the most important thing you can do to influence quality is the filmmaker you hire.”
When The Batman was originally in development, Emmerich’s first choice for director was Matt Reeves. following his work on Planet of the Apes franchise. Emmerich said that when he first met Reeves, “I had his remake of the Scandinavian film, Let me enterin my head.” Although Reeves was initially hesitant, Emmerich’s instincts have since proven to be right. The Batman topped the box office in its opening weekend, grossing $258.21 million worldwide.
When Emmerich got his job in 2017, one of his first decisions was to give Todd Phillips the green light. Joker. The film, which was intended as a break with Warner Bros.’ other DC Extended Universe efforts, became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time after grossing over $1 billion.
The Batman follows the Dark Knight in his second year after taking up the mantle. Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, must investigate a mysterious killer who targets Gotham’s political figures and leaves behind cryptic clues. The investigation forces the Caped Crusader to navigate the complex web of political corruption and mob violence that plagues Gotham. Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell and Jeffrey Wright.
There are plans for The Batman to receive two HBO Max spin-off shows, one after The Penguin and the other focused on Arkham Asylum. Other upcoming DC Films projects from Warner Bros. include black adam, the flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The Batman is now in theaters.
