There have already been some tantalizing sports dramas hitting screens so far in 2022, with a recent example being Hustle starring Adam Sandler.
While the two central characters were fictional, the same cannot be said for Rise.
Directed by Akin Omotoso, the biopic hit Disney+ as an Original Movie on Friday, June 24, 2022 and is based on the true story of three Nigerian-Greek brothers – Giannis, Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo – who move to the United States and become famous. and acclaim in the NBA.
Since watching the movie on the streaming service, fans who don’t know exactly all about basketball have been eager to do a little research on the Antetokounmpo brothers…
Rise’s Antetokounmpo brothers explored
First up we have Giannis Antetokounmpo (played in the film by Uche Agada and McColm Cephas Jr), who plays for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks.
He was widely dubbed the “Greek Freak” by sports fans and started playing basketball at an early age. Initiated reports that he entered the 2013 NBA Draft and was picked by the Bucks.
Since then, he has broken records, emerging as the first NBA player to finish a regular season in the top 20 in all five stats of total points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals, reports SB Nation.
In total, he has earned six All-Star selections and is proud to be one of the most notable and decorated players in all of sport.
The success of Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo
Diving into the accomplishments of the other Antetokounmpo brothers, Thanasis (played by Ral Agada and Chinua Baraka Payne) is the eldest of the brothers.
Sporting News reports that he played for Filathlitikos junior teams in 2008 and rose to make the senior team. Unlike Giannis, however, he withdrew from the 2013 NBA draft on deadline day. Nevertheless, he supported his brother during his glory days. One of many.
Thanasis played one season with the Delaware 76ers in the NBA G-League and was selected for the 2014 NBA Draft, securing him a spot with the famed New York Knicks.
He returned to Europe when he was not renewed at the Knicks but was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2019. The brothers, side by side, won a championship in 2021.
As for Kostas Antetokounmpo (played by Jaden Osimuwa and Aaron Kingsley Adetola), he is the youngest of the three and had similar experience in youth basketball to his siblings.
When Giannis was drafted by the Bucks, Kostas was playing ball in high school in the United States, but Basketball Fandom notes that he quickly earned a reputation as an incredibly talented player, helping schools win big. He played at the University of Dayton, Florida, before pursuing bigger things thanks to his selection in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
He then joined the Dallas Mavericks and oscillated between the NBA and the G-League.
While his brothers made waves with the Bucks, Kostas helped the Los Angeles Lakers win a title in 2021. Currently, however, he is with ASVEL Basket in the French league.
Who is Alex Antetokounmpo?
Alex (played by Elijah Shomanke and Jahleel Kamara) is the fourth and youngest of the Antetokounmpo brothers and he too is highly respected in the basketball business.
He played professionally in Europe before moving on to the 2021 NBA Draft. Sadly, he was not drafted but has reached a deal with Toronto Raptors’ G-League affiliate Raptors 905, as reported by Sporting. News.
